In many patients, it is often important to figure out whether the interstitial lung disease (ILD) is fibrotic or inflammatory or mixed and whether there is a potentially reversible (inflammatory) component or whether the ILD is irreversible and perhaps even progressive.
This snippet first revises the various signs of fibrosing and non-fibrosing ILDs and then discusses with examples, if it is possible to differentiate inflammatory from fibrotic ILDs and what the best way to do this is.
